What is now known as Yarra Park was, for thousands of years, an Aboriginal homeland. In European times parts of the land have been variously known as Yarra Park, Police Paddock, Government Paddock and Richmond Paddock. In 1858, Richmond Paddock was the site of the first ever Australian rules football match. Yarra Park is the home of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, host of the 1956 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games. Legendary heroes of athletics, cricket and football are honoured by a series of larger-than-life bronze statues by Louis Laumen.
