Annual subscription: $25.00
Non-members are welcome at individual meetings: $5.00
The Society meets at 8.00pm on the third Wednesday of even numbered months. The venue may be a local site, the East Melbourne Library or, most commonly, we have enjoyed the generous hospitality of the Menzies Foundation at Clarendon Terrace. The AGM is held at the October meeting.
The East Melbourne Historical Society was founded in 1999 by two neighbouring historians, Dr. Ann Colman and Dr. Liz Rushen, who saw the need for it. It had begun in 1998 as an offshoot of the East Melbourne Group's planning and heritage sub-committee. The East Melbourne Group is the local residents' action group whose main aim is to protect the area from inappropiate development. It soon became clear, however, that the historical society's scope could be wider than planning battles and it was agreed that it should become a separate incorporated body. The East Melbourne Group supported this and provided initial funding to set it up. Now, as well as collecting reference material, the society holds regular talks on a variety of topics relating to the history of East Melbourne and Jolimont. It publishes a small newsletter three times a year which lets members know of coming events as well as providing short articles of a historical nature. Contributions to the newsletter are welcomed.
